Rug under sofa placement: under the legs or in front?

For most living rooms, place the sofa’s front legs 6–10 inches onto the rug and keep the rug centered on the seating group. Put all legs on only when the rug is large enough to hold every seat; float the rug in front only in a very small room. With a chaise, the rug should run under the chaise and at least the front legs of the opposite seat.

Measure from the front feet

Start with the rug edge 6–10 inches (about 15–25 cm) behind the front feet. This is the distance from a foot to the rug edge underneath the sofa, not the gap from the sofa to the coffee table. If the feet sit 10 cm behind the sofa's front edge and the rug extends 15 cm behind the feet, the rug overlaps the sofa's footprint by 25 cm in total.

Front legs on is the safest layout

Slide the rug under the sofa until both front legs sit firmly on it. The rug then joins the sofa, coffee table and chairs into one group without paying for enough rug to cover the whole floor. Keep the exposed strip under the sofa even from left to right; a rug that catches one leg but misses the other looks accidental.

When all sofa legs should sit on the rug

Use all legs on when the rug can hold the complete seating group and still extend beyond the sofa arms. This works in open-plan rooms because the rug acts like a boundary. If the back legs land close to the rug edge, move down to front legs on instead of forcing a nearly-there layout.

Rug placement with a chaise or sectional

A chaise gives the arrangement a long side, so center the rug on the whole sectional, not only on its straight seat. Run the rug beneath the chaise and beneath the front legs on the opposite side. Leave the same visible margin past both outer arms whenever the room allows it.

Choose the size after measuring the layout

Measure the sofa across its outer arms, then measure how far the rug needs to reach towards the chairs or table. With the same centred 200 cm sofa along the rug's long side, the rounded sizes leave these margins:

Should a rug sit in front of the sofa?
