Sofa dimensions: standard couch sizes in inches and cm
A loveseat is 58–72 in (150–185 cm) wide, a three-seater 78–96 in (200–245 cm), and a sectional runs 95–110 in (240–280 cm) along its longest side. Depth is 32–42 in (85–105 cm) and back height 32–40 in (80–100 cm) for almost all of them. The numbers below are the ranges the market actually sells, not a standard anybody enforces.
Standard widths
Each type has its own page with seat height, seating width without the arms, the wall it needs and the rug that goes under it: 2-seater, 3-seater, 4-seater, corner sofa.
| Type | Width | Depth | Height |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loveseat (2 seats) | 58–72 in / 150–185 cm | 32–41 in / 85–105 cm | 32–37 in / 80–95 cm |
| Three-seater | 78–96 in / 200–245 cm | 35–43 in / 90–110 cm | 32–39 in / 80–100 cm |
| Apartment / small sofa | 47–58 in / 120–150 cm | 28–33 in / 70–85 cm | 30–35 in / 75–90 cm |
| Sectional (longest side) | 95–110 in / 240–280 cm | 59–71 in / 150–180 cm | 32–39 in / 80–100 cm |
Width is measured with the arms
The width in a listing is the outside dimension, arms included, not the seating space. An arm eats 6–10 in (15–25 cm) per side, so an 87 in (220 cm) sofa leaves about 71 in (180 cm) to actually sit on. If you need three adults across, read the seat count in the specs rather than the total width: one maker's 79 in (200 cm) is three seats, another's is two with generous arms.
Sleeper sofas
| Mechanism | Sleeping surface |
|---|---|
| Full / double pull-out | 54 × 72 in / 140 × 185 cm |
| Queen pull-out | 60 × 80 in / 152 × 203 cm |
| Click-clack / futon | 43–55 × 75 in / 110–140 × 190 cm |
| Chaise storage (sectional) | 55–61 × 79 in / 140–155 × 200 cm |
A pull-out needs 24–28 in (60–70 cm) of clear floor in front of it when open. Measure that gap to the coffee table before you decide the sofa is the right one.
How much room a sofa needs
Leave 24–36 in (60–90 cm) for walkways, 14–18 in (35–45 cm) between the sofa and the coffee table, and 2–4 in (5–10 cm) to the wall if the back is upholstered. A 87 in (220 cm) sofa therefore wants a wall of about 95–98 in (240–250 cm).
| Room | Sensible sofa width | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| under 130 sq ft / 12 m² | 59–71 in / 150–180 cm | straight sofa, slim arms |
| 130–195 sq ft / 12–18 m² | 71–87 in / 180–220 cm | sectional works if its short side is under 63 in / 160 cm |
| over 195 sq ft / 18 m² | 87–110 in / 220–280 cm | the sofa can float and divide the room |
Numbers narrow the shortlist; they do not show whether the piece looks right where it goes. When two candidates are left, check them in the room itself — see will my couch fit for the measuring routine and the try-on for the picture.
FAQ
What is the standard size of a sofa?
A three-seater is 78–96 in (200–245 cm) wide, 35–43 in (90–110 cm) deep and 32–39 in (80–100 cm) tall. A loveseat is 58–72 in (150–185 cm) wide. There is no enforced standard — these are the ranges the market sells.
How wide is a 3 seater sofa?
Usually 78–96 inches, or 200–245 cm, measured across the outside of the arms. Subtract 6–10 in (15–25 cm) per arm to get the actual seating width.
How deep is a standard couch?
35–43 in (90–110 cm) for a full-size sofa, 28–33 in (70–85 cm) for an apartment one. Deep seats over 40 in (100 cm) are comfortable to lounge in but hard to sit upright on.
How much space do you need around a sofa?
Walkways of 24–36 in (60–90 cm), 14–18 in (35–45 cm) to the coffee table, and 2–4 in (5–10 cm) to the wall behind. A sleeper needs another 24–28 in (60–70 cm) in front when it is open.
What size sofa fits a small living room?
In a room under 130 sq ft (12 m²), a straight sofa 59–71 in (150–180 cm) wide with slim arms. Skip the sectional: its short side alone usually eats the walkway.
