Every common size has its own page with exact conversions and room examples: 2×3, 3×5, 4×6, 5×8, 6×9, 7×10, 8×10, 9×12, 10×14 and 12×15.
Rugs are woven, not cut, so the real size drifts a centimetre either way — leave slack when the fit is tight. Too small a rug under a large seating group is the usual mistake: it reads like a bath mat. Which layout to choose is covered in what size rug for a living room and rug placement under a sofa.
Frequently asked
What is the most common living room rug size?
8×10 (244 × 305 cm) for a standard living room, and 5×8 (152 × 244 cm) for a compact one. Anything smaller usually reads as a mat rather than a rug.
How much should a rug extend past the sofa?
6–8 inches, or 15–20 cm, beyond each end of the sofa. Leave roughly 18 inches (45 cm) of bare floor between the rug and the walls.
